Hendricks County lawmakers: Local students encouraged to apply for House internship

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 25, 2026) – Hendricks County legislators are encouraging local students to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program for the 2027 legislative session.

State Rep. Becky Cash (R-Zionsville) said this paid, full-time internship is open to college students, recent graduates and students in law or graduate school from January through April.

"For students who want to make a difference in their communities, there's no better classroom than the Statehouse," said Cash, a member of the House Education Committee. "This internship allows young Hoosiers to see firsthand how ideas become policy and how public servants work every day to improve Indiana."

State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) said interns work in the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis full-time Monday through Friday during the legislative session and gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process.

"We've had so many students use this experience as a launching pad into rewarding careers, both in government and the private sector," Steuerwald said. "I encourage those who are eligible to take advantage of this program to learn more about potential opportunities and build job skills and professional contacts."

State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville) said positions are available in legislative operations, policy and communications.

"There's a wide range of roles for students to fill at the Statehouse," Haggard said. "House interns get hands on experience working with policy makers, learning the legislative process, communicating with the public and helping constituents."

State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) said this spring semester internship gives interested students opportunities to interact with state legislators, state agencies and private sector organizations, as well as participate in a weekly speaker series featuring Indiana civic leaders.

"Interning with House Republicans gives young Hoosiers practical real-world experience that will benefit them no matter what career path they choose," Thompson said. "It's also a great opportunity to build relationships with state and industry leaders that could lead to future employment."

Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
